The Epigenome & the Social Environment

28 May, 2015, M-Shed, Princes Wharf, Wapping Road, Bristol, BS1 4RN

11:00 to 17:00

There has been considerable interest in the Social Science community in the burgeoning field of epigenetics. This has ranged from the theoretical to the applied and in both domains the promise of epigenetic processes to serve as mediators between the social world and the biological – the process of embodiment, or in a popular phrase, how social experiences get under the skin – has been paramount.

Epigenetic measures can also serve as indicators of socially patterned exposures, even without themselves having downstream effects. Their particular value is that they may also indicate when in the lifecourse – from fetus to older adult – the exposures were experienced.

This conference, aimed at the Social Science community and the outcome of an ESRC “Transforming Social Science” award, will bring researchers and practitioners together to discuss the potential for incorporating molecular epigenetic measures into social science studies.

The conference will use podium presentations, posters, discussion groups and networking time to showcase recent research and facilitate discussion between delegates.

Confirmed speakers and discussants include:

Professor George Davey Smith, MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit
Professor Caroline Relton, MRC Integrative Epidemiology Unit
Professor Chris Power, Institute of Child Health
Professor Thomas Osborne, University of Bristol
