Location

This workshop will revolve around approaches in neuroscience and neuroeconomics to doing social experiments in the MR scanner – and what we would like to be able to do in the future. This includes the following topics: What are the current challenges and solutions in regard to neuroeconomic experiments, and what are the methodological and ethical considerations that go into those solutions? How do we meaningfully manage the trade-off between realistic, social interactive experiments and rigid, well-controlled methods? To what extent is it necessary to deceive participants and when does the data become uninterpretable as a result thereof.

We have invited Prof Antonio Rangel to share his thoughts on these and related issues. This will be followed by commentaries by our own Prof Chris Frith and Dr Josh Skewes, respectively, and lastly there will be time for responses and discussion (with the audience). Prof Antonio Rangel is a distinguished neuroeconomist from CalTech, director of the Neuroeconomics Laboratory, and co-director of the Caltech Brain Imaging Center. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University and is a leading researcher in the neural basis of economic and social decision making, using tools from cognitive neuroscience and experimental economics.

After the workshop there will be a short reception at the Interacting Minds Centre, where everyone is welcome (from about 3-4pm). And in the evening it will be possible to join a social dinner (at your own expense).
