Abstract

The free energy principle is a framework for describing the way biological or artificial agents act and perform inference on the state of their environment. In this framework, agents are described as acting and inferring environmental states so as to minimize the expected surprise at future input. I will give a short introduction into information theoretic foundations of the free energy principle and the related concept of active inference. I will explain the relation of information theoretic free energetic to the analogous concept in statistical mechanics, and I will give a simple example of an active inference agent maintaining allostasis while interacting with its environment.
