Abstract

A particularly interesting aspect of social behaviour is the ability to fall into sync with other humans. Studies on human synchronization show that complex interpersonal dynamics may appear even in simple interactions such as joint finger tapping. Previous research has demonstrated the existence of three distinct synchronization strategies: Leading-following wherein one person leads and the other follows, mutual adaptation wherein two people simultaneously and continuously adjust to each other, and the recently described leading-leading strategy wherein synchronous behaviour occurs with no clear directionality in the interaction. In this talk I will show how a Kuramoto-based coupled oscillator model is able to reproduce these strategies, and how they may be interpreted through self-other integration.
