Autism@Aarhus Spring Workshop 2014 "Autism and Sociality "

How do we measure sociality? What is it to have a social interaction? Is there one standard model of it that autistic individuals would typically fail to grasp? This workshop aims at finding answers to such questions in collaboration with members of the autism community.

Specialists as well as the public at large generally understand autism to involve a social deficit. As the very etymology of “autism” suggests, if anything defines this condition, then this social aspect does. Despite this fact, some fundamental aspects of sociality in autism are in need of further study and reflection. How does sociality differ in autism? Is it a deficit, a difference, or a deficit for some while a difference for others? How and for whom is this difference problematic? Are autistic individuals intrinsically disinterested in others or do they avoid social situations and interactions for other reasons? If the latter, is it correct to understand autism as involving a social deficit? Preliminary results indicate that autistic individuals feel lonely. What does this show about their sociality? How do we measure sociality? What is to have a social interaction? Is there one standard model of it that autistic individuals would typically fail to grasp?

This workshop aims at finding answers to such questions in collaboration with members of the autism community. Success in this endeavor will deliver a better understanding of the nature of autism and, thereby, of the type of help that is most beneficial to autistic individuals.
