Engagement is central to development. The nature and manner of infant engagements with the world  starting from birth reveal powerful interests and motivations as well as a profound openness to culture. In this talk I will discuss recent evidence of infant engagements with people's attention and intention over the course of the first year of life, and argue for a second person route to the knowledge of other minds.
