"Game theory" describes the use of mathematical modelling to understand the behavior of people and animals in interactions with others. The principal question has traditionally been: "why do people cooperate, when it seems more profitable not to?". In our work we have studied the payoff from cooperation when the usual pairwise interaction is exchanged for an N-person interaction (for N larger than 2), especially regarding populations where a given individual only interacts with a small subset of the full population.
